Namesake

I translated the song that led to my name.

I was named after the singer of this song because my mom liked it and it was popular at the time. I had asked my very conservative mother why she named me after a hippy revolutionary song and she had no answer for that. I always found it so strange.

I probably could have just looked up the translation but it meant more for me to translate it myself.

My mother’s name was Dolores, which while a beautiful name literally translates to pains. And in some strange subconscious way my mother always suffered from something physical. Whether it was asthma, arthritis, on and on…. something always seemed wrong.

And I wonder if there is something to that. I wonder if this song seeped its way into my subconscious also, and has had its own effect on my life. I can’t say. But it’s an interesting thought.
